In a bizarre and shocking case out of Omaha, a teen girl has been charged with murder after tossing her own baby out a second story window.
Antonia Lopez, 16, was alone in her room on Friday night when she went into labor prematurely. It is not clear how far along the girl was in her pregnancy, but the baby was only two pounds when delivered. Instead of alerting anyone to the birth, Antonia instead threw the child out her window, then asked via Facebook if anyone with a car would be willing to do her “a huge favor.”
A half hour after tossing the baby, Antonia told her mother what had happened. Her mother called 9-1-1. When rescuers arrived, they found Antonia’s mother holding the infant and attempting to perform CPR, but it was too late. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Some have offered a possible defense of Antonia: she was unaware she was pregnant, delivered a stillborn infant, and in a moment of panic, threw the body out the window. However, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said that for Antonia to be booked on the charges she was booked on, the child would have had to have been born alive.
Antonia had something of a troubled childhood, by all accounts. She had been reported as a runaway nine times in a single year, and had previously been in trouble for shoplifting.
Some of Antonia’s family members, including her grandfather, said they didn’t even know the teen was pregnant, and that she did not look it. Her grandmother told KETV that they didn’t know who the father of Antonia’s baby was.
Antonia’s Facebook, which is public and has been left as such since her arrest, reveals more clues, if you can sift through the 900 or so comments calling her a disgusting murderer.
One woman, Jenelle Cherry, claims that Antonia was pregnant with her little brother’s child. Jenelle’s own public posts reveal a litany of pro-life memes and rhetoric. Could Antonia have been pressured by outside influences to keep a baby she did not want, leading her to make an unforgivable, cold-hearted decision once the child arrived?
Antonia is scheduled to appear in court in December. She has been charged as an adult. Two seemingly lives over, just like that.
