Marcela Orand Arrested

Marcela Orand, a 36-year-old woman from Anchorage, Alaska, received a 15-year/5-year suspended sentence for a case of sexual abuse that occurred at her home-based daycare. According to the Anchorage Daily News, the abuses — details mercifully spared — occurred between October 2011 and June 2014, and they were disclosed by the little girl victim to her mother.

Sadly, this is not so unusual.

In the Alaska case, this is not where everything ends. During the course of the investigation, police were approached by two individuals claiming they were abused by Orand from 1997 to 1999. While the age of the latest victim was six, the alleged victims from earlier were a girl, 7 at the time, and a boy, 5. Doing the math, Orand would have been around 17 to 19 years old.

While there was not enough evidence to convict based on the past crimes, it does paint a pretty obvious picture of how the convicted targeted her victims. It’s also likely, according to the report, that these weren’t Orand’s only “successful” criminal acts. At least, the perception isn’t that a person like Orand comes along, does it once to see if she can get away with it, and then goes into “retirement” for a few years. Nope. You get away with something like this 20 years ago, and there’s probably going to be quite a few more between the first time and the last time.

However many there are, you will all rest easier knowing that Orand should be out and about rocking the proverbial ankle monitor in a few years and dodging school zones like nobody’s business. She will probably have to find a new line of work, though, because her license expired in 2015. (Yeah. That’s the only reason.)

Don’t take the wrong lesson from this horror tale, parents. Daycares are still a vital part of modern child-rearing and there are a lot of good ones out there. You may just want to think twice before choosing a home based center where the proprietor is giving off creepy sex-with-children vibes (see above image for reference).
