Takara Juntunen Sentenced

Takara Juntunen is not getting off the hook in the death of her 2-year-old son. The “mom” admitted that she left her toddler in the care of the boy’s father, Brandon Newberry, despite knowing he was high on meth at the time. As a result, Forest Groshelle was murdered by his father, who will now spend the next 40 years of his life at the Montana State Prison, where they don’t usually take kindly to people that hurt children.

As for Juntunen, she pled guilty to negligent homicide in October and earlier this week, received notice that she would receive 20 years in prison, with 15 of the years suspended, according to KRTV. Groshelle died from blunt force trauma, autopsy results showed. The child’s grandmother said the killing blow was to the boy’s abdomen.

“They explained it to us like it was a gunshot wound. That’s how they, that’s how hard the force had to have been to separate his intestines,” she said.

Both the Juntunen and Newberry sides of the family were said to agree with the 40-year sentence for Brandon, though it was not as clear on whether they agreed with Takara’s sentence. At 33 years old, and with good behavior, it is possible she could be out before the age of 40. Similarly, Newberry received “no parole restrictions” in his sentence.

We know China ditched the whole “one-child policy” thing some time ago, but people like Juntunen and Newberry make us think the world’s most populous country may have been on to something, at least in the spirit of the law. That is to say, some people should not procreate (or be allowed to). Unfortunately, we’re always finding the guinea pigs for such an experiment after they’ve already offed someone.

One commenter on the Flathead Beacon‘s coverage of the crime suggested a minimum IQ requirement for breeding. Simple enough, but last time we checked, stupid people didn’t have the market cornered on evil. What do you all think?
