Okay, so this is a confusing one, because there are a lot of people involved. It takes place in and around Gary, Indiana, which I can say, as someone who has been there several times, is a shit hole.
On June 26th, two brothers were kidnapped from a motel in Merillville. Aaeron Lackey, 18, and his little brother Antonio Lackey, 16, were staying there because their place in Gary had been shot up. They knew some real bad folks, including a family of David Johnsons. David Johnson IV and his wife, 35-year-old Jeri Woods, were particularly bad. Johnson IV and Woods were mad at Lackey, because he and his pal, 19-year-old Aarion Greenwood, were allegedly involved in the non-lethal shooting of a family friend, during which a .38-caliber revolver went missing. Johnson IV allegedly murdered a man with that very revolver, so he kind of needed it back. Lackey had already sold it to another man in exchange for weed and cash.
Anyhow, if you’re still following all of this, Johnson IV and Woods showed up to the motel where the Lackey brothers were crashing and forced them both, barefoot, into two separate cars. One of those cars, as well as a gun used in the kidnapping, was provided by Greenwood’s girlfriend Michelle Hughes, a 28-year-old mother of four.
The boys were driven out to what Woods called “the farm,” which was a 38-acre piece of land occasionally used by one of the Johnsons for hunting and fishing. There, the teens were forced to walk a half-mile into the woods by a couple of Johnsons and Woods. Johnson III demanded they strip, then Woods told them to hug each other before shooting them both in the head and torso. Their bodies were discovered three weeks later by a family who had gone to the area to fish. Their clothes were strewn a short distance away.
Hughes has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for her role in the murders. Greenwood has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and is awaiting sentencing. Woods has been sentenced to 120 years in prison. There are no winners here, only losers. Perhaps most tragic is the death of the younger Lackey, who had very little, if anything, to do with any of the things that led up to his murder.
