Jensen Buchanan has apparently been taking the decline of soap operas hard. The 55-year-old known to the world — okay, let’s be real, housewives with kids out of the house from the 1980s-1990s — as Sarah Gordon on television’s One Life to Live got soused and slipped behind the wheel of an automobile.
Buchanan, who also starred for a short while as twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love on Another World, probably wishes she was living in another world after getting sentenced to one year in prison and five probation last week.
The Santa Maria Times reports that Buchanan was driving on the wrong side of Highway 154 and “into the path of an Arizona driver.” The ensuing wreck nearly killed him. Injuries sustained included emotional distress, post-traumatic stress disorder, physical/financial damages, and then little (/sarcasm) things like a ruptured spleen, liver lacerations, a shattered pelvis, pulmonary embolism, and the likelihood of a heart transplant.
The victim, Bradley Asolas, and his wife faced Ms. Buchanan in a court last week and pleaded for the judge to give her the maximum prison sentence. Bradley described himself as a positive person, who had been “beaten down” by the accident and who seemed accepting of the fact that, because of the accident, he will likely die “before I would have.”
The accident also left a serious financial impact on the Arsolases, who have faced sky-high medical bills. A heart transplant would be the end of it for them, and they’ve already had to sell their home. Besides, there is no way Bradley will ever be able to work again.
In a statement to the family at sentencing, a tearful Buchanan had this to say: “I am the drunk driver who hit you, who caused tremendous, emotional pain and suffering. I am the one who made the tragic choice to drink and drive. I’m deeply sorry for all the pain I caused all of you.” Buchanan also swore she would never drink and remain in AA for the rest of her life. “You may never want to see me again, but I want you to know if you ever do want to see or talk to me, I’m here. If you want to yell at me, curse at me, pray with me, I’m here.”
Since Buchanan had no prior convictions, and since she had paid $5 million in restitution to the Arsolases, she got the one-year sentence.
