Sure, joke about lesbian women’s basketball coaches all you want. It’s a little less funny perhaps when it’s your daughter you discover was involved with the 28-year old HS freshman girls basketball coach. Also, huzzah, your daughter is a lesbian, if you weren’t aware.
Jessica Saffold, 28, stands accused of a sexual relationship with a ten 16-year old girl at the Firestone Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio, where she was the girl’s coach. Saffold has previously been an outstanding college women’s basketball player and junio college All-American. The alleged incidents took place during the 2016-2017 school year, though the precise duration of the sexual relationship between coach and student is not yet fully known. Saffold left the school at the end of that school year, but only recently was fingered (pun intended) by the high school girl who informed the new girls’ basketball coach about what the last coach had done with her in the dark. Coaches and teachers are bound by law now to report any knowledge of any sexual abuse, so the new coach told the school officials who told the cops who this past week arrested Saffold on multiple counts of sexual battery. Those charges in relation to Saffold’s position as a faculty member of the school, even if the girl was technically of legal age in Ohio.
‘Being a coach, a teacher, anybody in control of students, it doesn’t matter the age, in the state of Ohio [at] 16 years old, you can give consent, but not when you’re a teacher or a coach or a faculty member.’
As Saffold obviously had contact with multiple female students during her time at Firestone, not to mention she may have been coaching at other locations since she left that school, the authorities are broadening their search for other potential victims. These are the kinds of crimes that tend to occur in multiple instances, as sexual urges and the inability to control them as dictated by law are not the kind of thing that merely pops up ever couple of decades.
